Really Close Old Posts is a WordPress Plugin based off Matt Mullenweg‘s “Close Old Posts” plugin. Basically his version doesn’t modify the database, my version does. It only makes a call when a single post is viewed and only if pingbacks are turned on. This way you can enable comments on older posts simply by turning pingbacks off, and comments on.
The reason why I wanted the database modified is because spammers like to post the comments directly to the comment script. Having the database modified makes the comment script know the comments are no longer wanted, thus reducing the spam I have to moderate. Even though Spam Karma 2 correctly labeled it all as spam, it made it harder to look through it all and find incorrectly labeled comments.
