Why make it smaller?

So I periodically surf other exchanges to keep my accounts active, and something I’ve noticed on some exchanges really baffles me. They actually take my full screened browser window, and resize it smaller.

I don’t understand the logic in this. The whole reason is to view the site right? So why not let me view the whole site and not just 75% of it? Really weird..  Any thoughts?

Hi, Tim, that must be a script error I think, I mean who would deliberately do that?
By the way, which exchanges do it?
As you’re an expert maybe you can tell me, why do some of them open a new surf window automatically? It happened with IE, Mozzilla, but I’ve been fine since I started using Opera. So maybe you should try another browser?

  2. Yeah, I’ve noticed this too and it is very anoying! Any idea why this happens and how to fix it?

  3. Just one of the many reasons I quit using TEs! I’m now doing blasters and sending out 12 million ads a day! The numbers are there, they work! After all it’s all a numbers game!

  4. Chris says:

Not sure why this would happen. However one thing I do see happen is on my computer where I use dual monitors if I open up a window on one side and surf it blows it up and takes up both monitors. I’m sure its just something wrong with my video card or something though maybe?

    Regards,
    Chris

    • Tim says:

The problem isn’t your video card but that these javascripts aren’t written to handle dual monitors. That one I’m not sure what the solution is, though to be honest I haven’t tried to figure it out either =P

I had assumed it to be a browser issue,as if I surf in say Google Chrome it views normal but small in IE.

I know you do not want to name names, but if you ever get the opportunity I would love to know if my TE is showing that way-if it is I promised to find the reason and correct it.

    Forgive the mess-we are rebuilding-

  6. I myself haven’t noticed this change but just the thought of doing that really amazes the imagination.

We all know what the goal is, to get our ads viewed but I am not so sure the TE owners know this.

I have noticed at some TE’s that they are more interested in getting the admin’s ad’s viewed all over their surf pages which is a complete waste of my time.

So, If I am understanding this correctly, it may be another way for our ad’s not to be primary??
If I’m wrong, it wouldn’t be the first time.

Hope the family is well Tim.
    Good day to all.

  7. well, for the most part the exchanges try to automatically maximize your browser, but if it is coded incorrectly, it may be trying to set it to 800 x 1024, when instead they should first use javascript to determine the maximum widhr of your screen and then adjust.

i think they just assume we are all using a particular size and setting it to that.

  8. Edwin says:

LOL, I guess they do that so members are still able to read your blog while surfing.

    or… their mails?

There are also TE owners who do not like members that surf more then 1 TE at the same time.

And there are TE owners that do not like members using NoScript

What does it matter as long as you have to click, and at least see a fraction of the advertised site?
As long as it is attracting it will be noticed. Else like 95% of the sites advertised, it is seen everywhere and when seen once or twice it is no longer of any interest .

Interesting comments Ed (can I call you Ed?)

Have you thought of it this way?

      1. Do you want users to look at your site and see what you’re working hard to advertsise or do you just want them to catch it for a fraction of a second?

      2. After seeing Coca-Cola or Budweiser ads once or twice – did you just stop noticing them?

What happens when you go to the store and you’re looking for a nice refreshing cold one?

And you see a Coke or a Bud?

      Nothing?

      What about GAP, Nike, Apple?

    • Tim says:

Well NoScript it’s because it causes problems. For instance I changed the StartXchange surfbar and had tons of members send in support tickets that it was broken. No, it was NoScript blocking it.

  9. Jason says:

Yeah I have noticed that happening as well. My thoughts on that is that when the owner of the exchange does that, it could be that it is only being created in the browser that he/she is working with. So seeing how there are many different browsers being used on the internet, it just may be that you (myself included) are using a different browser than the one that it is created with.

    It is just a thought.

  10. Tony says:

This is a problem with the Walkers script where the default setting automatically resizes the browser, affecting all your open tabs. It can be changed though in the admin side of the script.

  11. Edwin says:

    You mention it already,

These companies know how to catch people within frames of seconds.

  12. Michelle Schneider says:

I’ve noticed that at a few exchanges. It was annoying. Then I found a solution. In my browser preferences, there are advanced javascript options. In that options box you specify what you allow javasript to do. I unchecked all the options. One of the options is to resize and move windows.

[WORDPRESS HASHCASH] The poster sent us ‘0 which is not a hashcash value.

  13. Michelle Schneider says:

I had a long comment typed out, but It disappeared.

Basically, there is an advanced javascript option is most browsers where you can specify what scripts can and cannot do. One option is to allow scripts to resize windows. Uncheck the box and sites can’t resize you browser window.

  14. I noticed this myself with a few exchanges and it seems to have to deal with the ones the run the Ventrino script from what I can tell it might be an option. If you try to customize the screen at all and make it say 50% of your screen it auto adjusts and reopens it to 75% which is a good feature. But I am with you when saying let it be opened to fit my entire screen instead of 75% it is a bit of a hassle.

  15. the clutter bothers me more than anything…Tezak and Start xchange would be better if the bottom frame was removed.

Hate to say it but I choose to surf exchanges that have a cleaner no clutter look. I surf them occasionally cause I like the owners but must add the clean ones are where I put my limited time effort
