Utilizing Monster Splash to the Max

by Tim on April 9, 2010

Today Logiscape has launched a new service called Monster Splash. Essentially what this does is places a splash over your page for 10 seconds, sorta like pop-ups used to work before pop-up blockers were invented. And it does it without making the browser move around or do weird stuff.

If you have a WordPress blog, there is a trick I wanted to let you in on. First you'll need your blog's home URL. For me it's simply: http://www.timlinden.com/blog/

You'll need to enter this into Monster Splash, and grab the link they give you. Then copy & paste this into your WordPress blog's header.php page, somewhere between the <head> and </head> tags:

<?php
if ( is_home() ) {
?>
<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
if (top == self) window.location.replace('http://www.monstersplash.com/sites/10013')
//-->
</script>
<?php } ?>

Of course you'll want to replace the Monster Splash link with your own. What this will do is redirect to the special link if someone accesses your home page. It will look and function like the rest of your site, but it'll actually be within their frame so the splash ad can do it's magic.

Doing it this way you'll be able to leverage the traffic you already have on your site. With blogs it's great because you do get search engine traffic, so you can utilize that 10 seconds for extra promotions you wouldn't have done if you didn't have it there.

Just a word of wisdom: Don't get carried away. I'm only doing this on my home page, but you theoretically could do this on all your pages. But you don't want to kill your user experience, seeing it once is enough. It will be interesting for me to see how much this converts and adds to the subscribers on my blog. I should be able to reach some people outside traffic exchanges with this method ;-)

As you can see, I’m having a really bad reaction to this program and the code I put in. I am working on finding the code but I’ve had no luck so far.

That I can see, I’ll have to delete my main vacation website and start over. I’m not pleased but I do understand that it may not be the fault of Monster splash. It may just be a bad marriage with my wordpress theme.

I deleted my Gimme A Dream Vacation site to get rid of Monster Splash because I couldn’t find the code I put into it. That was a good working site too and I’m really disappointed. I won’t be involved with Monster Splash EVER!

The code doesn’t permanently change your site? If you take it out then it’ll stop putting the ad up. It should be in header.php of your wordpress template (unless you put it somewhere else)

I couldn’t take it out because I couldn’t find it. You see it is a very large code (100+ coded programs about 4000 lines long) and I let the program place it so I didn’t know where it was. I’ll be more careful the next time, but my site is still down :( I don’t know how to reactivate it and of course the programmer is on holidays, of course. I do hope I haven’t lost the posts though since I did them directly on the blog. I’ll know better the next time.

Hi Tim,

I just now saw this on one of my sites…someone added it as one of their websites. I thought it was very interesting and I did try it out. It looks like it will be a winner! Logiscape always does a great job with whatever they create it seems…I like I’ll be using this myself.

Thanks for always giving us great advice!

How is this program any different from Traffic Python, Phantom Link Cloaker or any of the many other similiar programs out there??

From what I can tell you select different ad sizes, the others as far as I’m aware only have the bottom ad.

I have a Wordpress site that is in Google Search 1st page for its keywords- “adsense alternatives” and with the monster code on it shows the monster url in the address bar and not the sites url, no matter how the site is accessed

Google tells me this will cause me to lose my ranking- so goodbye to monstersplash

others with search ranking beware
