Traffic Exchange Market Share

by Tim on March 8, 2009

In the Affiliate Funnel conference room yesturday afternoon, Jon Olson announced the top 10 exchanges brought in over 7,000 new members that week combined. I don't remember the exact number, but that's a big number.

However, one must wonder how many of those 7,000 joined more than one of the top 10 that week, right? It's one of the things that's brought up about SuperSurf periodically..  No point in surfing the same 5 exchanges when they have the same people surfing, right? Wrong.

I've been analyzing the traffic that Traffic Exchange List tracks, and using it to determine the Market Share of the exchange industry. While it can't be 100% accurate, it does have some telling numbers.

For instance the most recent report (I update it once a week) showed that Traffic Splash had 8,947 members that StartXchange didn't have, StartXchange had 7,435 members that Dragon Surf didn't have, Dragon Surf had 3,502 members that I Love Hits didn't have, and I Love Hits had 3,454 members that Advertising Knowhow didn't have.

If you were to drill this down to all 5 exchanges compared to every other exchange, you'd see that it's clear the SuperSurf exchanges do have overlap, but it's also clear that they do indeed have different memberships.

So while there may be some overlap in that 7,000 number, it's big enough to know that new people are coming in, and in large numbers..  Which is great!

Tim,

How are you measuring your data? It’s my experience that people use different user names and email addresses when registering at different traffic exchanges, I know I do and many others do as well. If your measuring ip’s then everyone that still has dial up their ip changes every time they dial in and people have more then 1 computer, register at work, use their laptop, get a new computer, etc.

Could be many more of the same users that your are not taking into account the different variables.

Wow those are some very interesting numbers. How does that overlap compare with smaller exchanges?

Solomon Hueys lastest blog post..Where are you getting your advice from?

It depends on the exchange. Owners can download a full report inside Traffic Exchange List on how their exchange compares to other exchanges.

Tim,

I have been using your reports for Hit Bandit to concentrate my advertising, and with some very good results.

I even found a few TE’s that I hadn’t been advertising on, that had thousands of members Hit Bandit doen’t have. This was a good argument to expand my advertising to them.

Conversely, I also noticed that some TE’s where I’ve recruited well in the past show little or no traffic on the List. I can only assume this is due to a lack of data from those TE’s.

For the TE’s that show the largest number of non-overlapping users, I’ve also checked their traffic using my own trackers, to see how widespread it is. Looks like your list is accurate for at least the top TE’s.

Regards,
John

John

Yes, the reports aren’t complete as it can’t track all traffic. However if you use the TEtoolbox rotator for your advertising it’ll help collect more data to make it more accurate ;-)

Another great post Tim. Isn’t it always quoted that on average it takes at least 7 exposures to an ad for someone to take action. Far easier to do this if those people are members of more than one exchange so I take those common members as a bonus. If they surf alot in all 5 super surf exchanges THEY WILL SEE MY ADS :) If my ads are good enough they will be effective. Probably need different ads for these people as compared to the new people who join only one or 2 of these exchanges. And that’s where getting them on YOUR list to explain all this, works super well with traffic exchanges. Again why they can be so effective :)

Cheers
Martin

I know some people try to get in more than one account, I guess they don’t think we get notified of their IP address, but I would think there is some pretty large overlap, especially if they are following the Affiliate Funnel downline builder.

Some people may but the vast majority are unique real people. Just because an exchange is in the AF downline builder doesn’t mean that all the members joining their exchange are coming from it.

Hi
I love your posts I find out new stuff all the time.I think if people go outside the te’s to get people, then that will make the new people in TE’s grow allot.I have been trying to do that now.

Hi Tim,

Interesting post as always. The figure is rather impressive, but like what Rich Morris mentioned, not everyone uses the same username / email address.. What is the conclusion based on?

Tim March 9, 2009 at 1:01 pm

It’s based on data collected by rotators.

sounds good. keep up the great work

Les Stevens March 9, 2009 at 1:25 pm

Thank you Tim.

Informative and pretty precise. Even if a few of the usernames etc are different it makes it clear that our websites are being seen by fresh eyes no matter what.

Thanks Tim for this valuable info. I am one of the surfing members that utilizes multiple traffic exchanges including the ones in the SuperSurf program, they may have the same members sometimes but that proves instrumental in the sense that if they see your offer several times and in different places they are bound to give your offer a try. Thanks again.

Rich Morris March 11, 2009 at 10:20 pm

There is a very large amount of people who use different names/email addresses in different traffic exchanges. I never realized it before I ran promotions with other exchanges and a number of the same people were winners but most used different user names and email addresses. Sure there will always be a small percentage of members that are unique to a particular traffic exchange but I doubt there is anyone that is a member of just 1 traffic exchange unless they joined, didn’t find traffic exchanges useful to their needs and never came back or joined any other traffic exchange. Those would be non active members and they are worthless to anyone.

This information is not based on account data, it’s only based on users actively surfing during the last 2 weeks.

I want to thank you for your information about clicking on the spam in e-mails. I am a newbie and I thought that by clicking on the spam option I was just having my e-mail account put future e-mails from those people into my junk e-mail account instead of the regular account. I have mistakenly caused problems for others unknowingly because I would not label most e-mailers as spammers. From now on I will first just unsubscribe first and if that is not possible then use the spam button. Thanks again I am sure that I am not the only one who didn’t know what that button did.
