There was incredible chatting going on from my last post, in fact there are 52 comments! It's clear that many of you have an understanding of the team concept.
It makes sense too, because we are all working out of different locations so when you log in each morning it's easy to feel like it's you vs the world. But when you are in a team, it only takes a few minutes to open that inbox and be reminded that you've got other people backing you up.
Jon Olson and I had a conversation with Rusty of Team Ocean Swell. He came in to Traffic Exchange Live and chatted for a while. I'm happy he did, because he was able to see we weren't anti teams, and we were able to see he wasn't making some of the crazy claims (although let me remind you, the last post wasn't directed at him).
The whole team concept has duplication involved, and when that happens the people duplicating can make claims or promises. Like one person said this can happen on just about any business.
So if you are in a team it's important to attract people who want to build a real business, and aren't in it for fast cash. The reason is that people in it for fast cash are fast to leave. You can spend lots of time, energy, and even money on a person who really isn't in it for the long haul.
That's where the promises come in. If you word things the wrong way you could find your team filled with fast cashers. What you want is long haulers, because you want to build a strong steady business. So you need to teach them how to use the services they are signing up for.
If they use the auto-responder in their business, they won't leave. It's really that simple. Moving auto-responders is a pretty tedious job and it makes most people nervous. So if they know how to use it, and are actively building lists with it, chances of them leaving for any reason is very small.
You also do need to look at your wording for legal reasons. Since 2001 there have been many things coming and going in the exchanges, and many of them have told us that the police won't care what they are doing. And then the site disappears and there are rumors (or in some cases actual proof) that the people are in big legal hot water.
Anyone remember 12DailyPro? There were people who swore that thing worked and that it was legit. But it got into the media, the government got involved, and shut down. I'm not saying that's what will happen with the teams, let's be clear on that. What I am saying is simply claiming the government wouldn't care about a claim won't actually stop them from investigating.
So what's my recommendation? Well truthfully I think joining a team is a great idea. I've thought about doing some kind of team thing myself. Just check out the team first, see if they are interested in teaching you how to build a business, or are they interested in filling your levels. If they'll show you the ropes on starting your business, then I think it's a good thing.

Tim WOW that was a powerful article the team concept
is a great one but as you said if any one is plaining on joining
a team they do need to check the team out and be sure they
are going to teach them how to use the tools to build their list
as we all know the Money is in the list, as a team member if
we are putting our team members first then we will succeed
as the saying is help enough people succeed and you will be
successful
Tim…you, Mr. Olson, and Rusty truly are men with integrity and passion. I think yesterday’s discussion was outstanding and very determined. I think we all grew a little bit from it. And yes, moving auto-responder systems is quite a chore…I’m switching 4 years worth of responder series right now…it’s taken a month so far and probably 1 or 2 more months to finish…tedious, tedious work!
I enjoyed the discussion at TELive. It proves that when we get together to understand each other, things work out for the better.
I like this thread MUCH better than yesterday’s. Nice job, Tim.
Well said Tim- Most of the teams are looking to help. It’s easy to spot the ones who are in it for just the cash- As the teams grow, I know there will be lots of things to look closely at, but for now, I am thinking that giving people a real chance to see how marketing works from many angles, without needing to dump in the cash it takes to get it right is a good thing.
Just to clarify a bit- When you are learning how this all works, it is easy to try to do it all at once- I think the teams that are allowing leaders to emerge and learn and grow are great- Not all folks want to lead, some just want to do what they are asked and turn a little profit. If you are giving folks a framework and guiding them, i think it will help them in the long run- plus it will save lots of headaches and wasted cash!
er…was that what we in the UK call a U turn?
?
Great information and discussions both days.
Loved the lively discussion at TE live yesterday.
You guys are GREAT…..
Brenda
It’s good to get the debate going, different opinions on the topic.
I still maintain, what Rusty is doing is brilliant. I think it takes a lot of vision to create something with a simple rotator and auto responder.
My only concern is that people are promoting Traffic Wave for the wrong reasons. Sure you can make a few extra bucks but like my good buddy Jerry Reeder constantly says, you can make a FORTUNE by USING the autoresponder…
Promote a service and tool because you use it, believe in it, the money for referring people is just a bonus…A good bonus too but not the reason people should join any MLM…
Yeah, Rusty has informed us from the get go what we are trying to accomplish. He, also, is very adamant about following up and making sure that people know about how to use the autoresponder long into the future. Teaching people the proper way to conduct business using an autoresponder.
But Eric, the first email he sends tells people the real reason they are promoting TW is for the affiliate program…I mean it just gives people the wrong message…
“The TrafficWave auto-responder is an excellent product and something
that everyone in the Internet Marketing industry needs. But admit it -
the REAL reason you’re here (and reading this) is TrafficWave’s world
famous affiliate pay plan”
That’s my issue. I know, i’m preaching to the choir because people LOVE the MLM structures and all, but you can make a lot more money USING traffic wave, not just promoting it.
You say, ‘sell the steak’. I say, ‘sell the sizzle’. It’s a style preference, that’s all. If you think about the net result of what Team OceanSwell is accomplishing, you’ll see the truth of it. Ya’ just kind of have to meditate on it…
Fair enough brother. Good on ya for making it such a success.
Tim,
Great debates. I am so glad you had the follow up today. The problem I had with the original post was the title.
“These Teams” which gave the reader the impression that all teams are border line unethical in their promotion efforts. your post today was fantastic because it made readers aware that all teams are not created equally.
I am a team leader in a GDI business builder. Our members are educated in all facets of marketing traffic exchanges, safelists, forums,
blogs, e-zine, auto responders and even search engine tactics.
This is knowledge and training that is obtained for around 30 cents per
day. So obviously I would recommend that anyone that is new or unsure how to market any business on the internet, join a team. As you say just do your research and make sure you join the right team.
The team concept is exactly what this industry needs. Too many Gurus and MIA uplines that don’t give the help that was promised before the sale.
With the hits requirement it also keeps people from getting a free ride while others do all the work.
It’s a win win.
