The Results You’ve Been Waiting For

Well I waited longer than I said I wait to publish the results of my multi-variate testing. And the results are going to SHOCK AND AWE you. The results were..

multivariate2

Not much.. The only thing that had some decent improvements was not having my photo on the page. Go figure. The thing to note is the chance to beat original column. Most aren’t very high. That’s because the numbers are fluctuating in a way that you can’t really tell for sure if that’s the reason.

This tells me two things: 1) the variations aren’t big variations 2) branding is a key factor. It seems to not matter so much what is on the page, but that the person sees it multiple times. That’s because what is on the page isn’t varying enough to effect the message in any way. Maybe I should get more edgy with the changes?

  1. That looks likes some pretty interesting data but could you give a little bit more of an explanation on how to read the graphs on the left.

Each section is a different part of the page. This one is actually of a different splash page, because the one for TEList showed changes within the margin of error.

It’s hard to explain it but it’s basically telling you which versions of each part are having any impact on conversions. So the first thing is Headlines, there are 3 variations and the stats for it. You can see the original, then 2 different ones (one with slight improvement, another slight decrease).

Gasp….Not branding, not sticking your face in front of people for as long as you can….Tim, that doesn’t work LOL Great stuff man but yeah, like Marc mentioned, what does the graphic represent? lol

Do you have unique visitors factored in somewhere? Again, it just goes to show the average TE surfer that is takes effort and time to get any results worth noting. Something a lot of people ignore. No wonder we need to constantly get new members. I hope you do another post about your thoughts and summation of the whole little exercise.

Good question.. I don’t know! It’s done through Google so I don’t exactly know if they show the same variations to certain IPs, or if the stats are only based on uniques, etc. That might be why it’s not so helpful..

I *told* you that stoner face/confused-looking photo was hideous! Now try it again with a photo of you looking freshly-showered, aware, and with a brain, and let’s see how that goes. Try variations where you look hip, sweet, and business-like, and let us know how those work.

I understand the graphics (the yellow is merely what’s in column two), and find the whole thing fascinating. Thanks for doing this!

It’s funny but I happened to agree with BinkyM on the face/photo thing. =)

Well, finally some one said it. I believe in, and have seen results from branding. . .however, a personal pic is not the only way to brand. Multiple visits by the same person is part of the key, while a friendly face will convert more than a non friendly face. try to SMILE, and see if that helps. And thanks for hooking us up with your stats!

  7. Not sure where this is going, but,
the Tim Linden face has become a standard on my computer and would be lost without it. (try a smile)
    LOL

Very interesting…So if this graph is true then showing on the 100th page is a Super Idea? The more seen the more people are apt to go with you? Very nice work Tim.

Thanks for the information. I am like Jon and Marc what does them there thing a ma bobbers on the left mean?

As far as the picture goes you could but you child back in the picture and open that controversy all over again. LOL

    Thanks

Could you please explain what the chart means? Maybe tell us what each column stands for? I’m just a little confused when I look at the chart is all haha.

Also maybe you should test the 3 main things that help conversions and then compare them to see which got you the best results.

    1. Picture (you already tested)

    2. Audio

    3. Video

    Hi Tim,

Quite interesting findings, though I dont quite understand the graph. What does the last line stands for?

  12. Hey Tim. I do this kind of testing for a living. If you send me your data in excel, I can run it through a program called Minitab that will give you a graphical output called an ANOVA Main Effects Plat that will better show your results.

  13. TEs are tough. The last column shows us that we need to get quite a lot of visitors to have any significant amount of conversions.

I love stats too, but I have to admit I’m a little lazy in that regard… :-)

Thanks so much for the information

Wow the graph is interesting. Is this what you use as a statistic to generate visitors in Startxchange. This is highly recommended in generating a high conversion rate in knowing how well traffic is moving. The key is BRANDING. Great tips Tim, thanks for sharing.
