A Slice of Humble Pie?

by Tim on March 4, 2010

It's kinda funny that I posted the whole "Who's Job is it Anyway" post. Shortly after making that post I received feedback from two people on two different sites.

The first one was a rather unhelpful comment on the blog saying TEList wouldn't let them unsubscribe. Unhelpful because they put a fake email and name, so I couldn't unsubscribe them. But I did get that unsubscribe link to work.

And the second one was a member finding a video on how to cheat StartXchange. Oh boy. The sad thing is this method of cheating is super simple and I had previously had it setup so you couldn't use it on StartXchange. At some point I must have removed that portion of code.

So in the end I still think it's the owner's responsibility, no doubt about that. I should have tested that unsubscribe link thoroughly, and I should have paid more attention while playing with the code. In the end two members (well, one ex member? LOL) helped me out, and I appreciate that.

Hi Tim,

I got the email from that same member about the video with the cheat info on it.

How do I prevent that at Top Flight Traffic and will the fix be available to all TE owners?

Tim March 4, 2010 at 11:04 am

It’s a real simple fix. If your exchange is affected you should make sure you are using the most recent version of that script. LJ/TCNTE/KRTCNTE/LFMTE are not affected by the cheat.

Hey Tim it’s great to except responsibility! Hurray! For you. Not many people do that any more, couldn’t you pass the buck to anyone else? LOL! Terry

Hi Tim,

for sure you can’t be on top of everything all the time but as soon as you became aware of the issues you were on it and got it fixed fast! Especially the cheat I’m sure. And that is one of the primary reasons I continue to surf start xchange. The owner matters!!!

Tim although you may feel a little responsible those that perpetuate
such heinous acts will find a way no matter how vigilant you are. But as Guy said your quick response is one of the reasons this is such a great surf site. You deserve better my friend.

Hello Tim, there always will be cheeters out there, so one must watch out all the time everywhere and not to forget “the dark side”… It’s the real life!
Be well

Hi Tim,

I read your post yesterday but didn’t get a chance to respond. It is the owner’s responsibility of course, but like so many things in life people do not like to own up to their responsibilities and mistakes.

These people need to learn that they may be able to lie to themselves for a while, and they may be able to lie to others without getting caught, but the One we must all answer to eventually you can not lie to. He is all knowing and they will eventually have to face the truth, so it is better to take responsibility now and apologize for their mistakes and correct them.

It’s so easy to try to blame others for our own mistakes and/or things we should be responsible for. But considering the way the world is these type of things are very insignificant, so just deal with them and get on with the day!

Sometimes it’s the members that are the ones who give us all the good ideas/fixes ;)

Hi Tim.

Just another reason why you are one of the TOP owners with one of the TOP traffic exchanges!!!

I say Kudos to Tim and all the TE owners that really care about their TE and yes there are a lot out there. But on the other side there are ones that do not care. Those are the TE’s I stay away from.

I think TE owners and surfers have to work together to make this all work for all of us.

TE owners have the responsibility to work hard to keep their site clean and cheat free and everything else that they do. As a surfer we have to be alert to those out there that are trying to cheat the TE owners because in fact they are cheating us, the surfer that is trying to do an honest business. And we have to alert the TE owners when we see or hear something. We have to surf and really SEE the sites and take a look if something interests us and not just surf for credits.

I don’t want these cheat bots or whatever they are called out there seeing my, sites do you? I want real honest, breathing people t see my sites that I work hard to get seen.

Just my .02 worth.

Hi Tim, I also read your post yesterday “Who’s Job is it Anyway”, but got busy with my own traffic exchanges and forgot to comment.

It is most definitely the owners responsibly to make sure everything is working properly.

I have only owned my first traffic exchange for 2 years, now I own 2, not really sure what I was thinking….LOL

I have made a few mistakes and missed a few things, but when I do and get called on it, I fix the problem very quickly. I also reward the member that brings these things to my attention with cash and a quick letter stating how thankful I am for their help.

Sometimes you just have to swallow your pride and go on.

I have been a member of StartXchange since 2001, thanks to the late great Doug Williams turning me on to your TE, so I think that in itself says a lot about you and your traffic exchange.

Best Regards,

Steven

Good catch on the video, Brenda. ;)

Nowadays after getting my feet wet as an owner I can spot a TE that’s not paying attention or doesn’t care what’s going on with their site in just a few pages of surfing, usually.

From my own standpoint, it’s been worthwhile to me to know real people are viewing sites on my TE and real people are winning promos and contests, even if the surfing activity has been lower than usual because of massive cleanup over the last few months. But really surfing activity hasn’t been too bad and it kind of evens out, I think, in that surfers like to surf TEs they know are clean and adamant about keeping them that way (much as Brenda said).

StartXchange is the five-star TE when it comes to clean for sure. In all the years I’ve been a member now only once have I come across a framebreaker, and that was one that Safe Site Scanner caught early on post-installation when it was halting them if one came up. Aces.
