198 Subscribers from Traffic Witch

by Tim on November 28, 2008

So far I've received 198 new subscribers to my blog from Traffic Witch alone! I'm really excited, so welcome to all the new subscribers! Today I'm going to tell you how I did it, and why I think it worked so well. I've got some cool graphics to show you as well.

This is the splash page I used. The big F box is a flash powered video, of me welcoming people to Traffic Witch and asking them to subscribe to my blog. This is a heatmap showing where people clicked on the page, and you can see that a very tiny amount clicked on the video itself while the majority clicked the opt in form.

I was lucky enough to purchase the first page for the first week of Traffic Witch, which I think is helping with the results. As my blog is targetted at helping people use traffic exchanges, new people coming in will see it first, and if they are brand new to exchanges they are very likely to subscribe.

Also note with this page, even if the video didn't load, it's explained what my blog is about with the headline and bullets. This is important because not everyone has flash and some have NoScript disabling it.

Finally the call to action is a simple subscribe form! Remember that the people visiting your advertisement are there to surf, so you need to make it easy for them to get the info you want to give them later. The best way to do this is by asking for their email address. It takes them 2 seconds and they can go back to surfing!

One more thing I did, if you look at the bottom right it's hard to see with the heat map, but I included the feedburner subscriber count. This adds a layer of reputation to the page because they see thousands are reading. It works great when people don't recognize your name yet. Just remember it will also hurt you if the number is very small!

So that's what I did, have you tried out Traffic Witch yet? If not you should! Guido is getting lots of people from outside the normal traffic exchanges, which is why I'm getting such great results. When I advertise in other exchanges most of the people surfing already know who I am from running StartXchange Traffic Exchange.

Nice article, Tim. Have you done any testing to see how well a first page ad does over a regular ad in rotation?

Just wondering what the ROI is.

Oh, BTW, I designed my new squeeze page and used your suggestion. You can see it here:

Thanks for that!

Looks good – just remember if you are advertising that in exchanges, the ad-alyzer tracker ads at least 2 seconds to the load time (meta refresh is 2 seconds, PLUS the load time of the tracker itself PLUS the load time of the splash page itself). So by the time it loads for some users they could have already clicked the next page.

Hmph. I didn’t realize it took that long! Don’t know what to do now…I need to track.

Glad you like the page :)

That’s great results Tim!

I have been wondering about the best way to get subscribers to a newsletter or to a blog from Traffic Exchanges.

What you did has to be the single best method I have seen so far, at least for a new traffic exchange.

Good article Tim. You were lucky to get the first page for the first week. I am sure Paul, Jon, Sunny and others have rocks to chunk at you the next time they see you.

I have a real good conversion rate on the ads that I have been running in Traffic Witch. Much higher then what I am used to from the other exchanges. Even a higher converson rate then here at StartXchange which has consistently beaten the other Traffic Exchanges.

It will be interesting to see what happens after all the excitement of the launch calms down. I do agree that a lot of what is happening is because Guido is bringing in people that normally do not use Traffic Exchanges.

So, where did you get the site to host your splash page?

Tim November 29, 2008 at 12:40 pm

I have a dedicated server from SoftLayer. I’ve also used Dreamhost (use coupon TIMLINDEN for some kind of deal [i forget what]).

Dreamhost is good with static content, but a bit slow on dynamic (php/mysql) content for splash pages. Most of the time you won’t need that dynamic content anyways but if you are using a content management system to make your pages chances are it’s using PHP even when the page is static.

Congrats on all the new subscribers. I joined and I really enjoy surfing there. Might try that first page deal myself one of these days.

Thanks for all the good info.

Traffic Exchange users never cease to amaze me, Tim. I checked out the Traffic Witch site, and I saw repeated people putting full blown ecommerce sites, blogs, etc. as the page being advertised on Traffic Witch.

You have 10 seconds or less to get someones attention, depending on how fast your page loads. They don’t have time to read your site. Get them to optin to something and they could read it later.

Thanks. — Dennis Grubbs

Hey Tim,

Nice forethought on acquiring the first page on a new traffic exchange. Also interesting strategy on acquiring the unique domain name…
Would be interesting to know the number of hits received to achieve your 198 sign ups.

LOL I was hoping nobody would ask. I forgot to put it in a tracking link! I think the first page package has stats though so I might be covered.

I just went to http://blogsearch.google.com and searched for “traffic exchanges”. This blog post came up as number one in the search results.

So, Tim, what did you do to make this post rank #1?
