List Builders.. Using your From Email??

So I’m starting to use lots of list builders and play with them and figure them out. One thing I’ve noticed is that some of them let you customize who the emails are coming from. The idea is that you get branding from it.

My question to you is this..  Do you customize it?

What I’ve noticed is the emails that use a custom “from” address are going to my spam, while the emails coming from the site itself are delivered fine. Email Service Providers use email history so when you say “This isn’t spam” or “This email is safe” it learns.

I’m wondering if it’s just because I’m new to list building, that my ESP is seeing all these new kind of emails as spam. Or if it really is a bad idea to use that custom from field.

List Builder Users: Please login to your email account you use at list builders / safe lists and check inbox and spam. Report back here your findings.. Are custom from emails going into spam more often than others? I’m definitely curious.

    I too wondered about that, so I send all mine as from the listbuilder itself, rather than from me since not everyone bothers to check their spam folders. If you have signed up with the listbuilder, I presume you have white-listed THAT email. In the beginning, almost everything that was custom went into spam, even though the title of the email had the list-builder within it. Since I have marked each one NOT SPAM, they mostly seem to be ending in my inbox, although on a daily basis, I still find 4 or 5 in my spam folder. I had not thought to keep track of who gets discarded by the system, I had just thought it was new members.

    Interesting discussion Tim, I have two gmail accounts and have set up both with filters to ‘never send to spam’ anything addressed to my email addresses….seems to work for me, they are my list building/safelist emails after all not my personal or communicating address. Saved alot of time to whitelist all mail directed to my addresses rather than mail from each safelist.
    I then let MySafeListBiz control both address and the wizard does the rest.

    I would love to use my own “From” address but in my short experience with safelists, most of the from e-mails is going straight to the gmail’s spam folder.

    There are many tricks in which you can avoid this to happen, like using filters with specific words inside the e-mails according to the safelist you are targeting (like Darren Olander shows in the CTP training) but think about this…

    Does everyone else use their filters? Probably not.

    That’s why I’d rather use the standard “From” address and have my e-mails delivered fine to other people’s inboxes.

    To be honest, I’m not sure how useful it is… I will be collecting actual data across all my mailing history sent by users through my sites (with help from my programmer) to see what the difference is as far as click through rates of using your own from or the sites from, and based on that probably deciding if I will keep it as a feature or not going forward.

      Great! I hope you share your results. I see why in theory it would increase results – the branding, etc. But I don’t know if it gets outweighed by spam filters or not.

    I can’t comment on the spam folder issue but I send mine using the mailer’s address.

    As much as I love transparency I don’t need 100s of marketers replying to my ads with ads of their own or adding my email address to their autoresponders.

    I used gmail, filters and labels so they will not fill my inbox. When you create a labal you tick a box saying never send to spam. Although I noticed a couple slipped by That also helps you manage your list builders and Gmail

    Since I’ve been using Yahoo for my emails anybodies mail can end up in spam. The custom field makes it hard for me too tell if I should go on or delete it unless of course I know of them. You know safelist@ .com verses Joeblow@ .net. Gmail I find that even mail sent straight to folder will still end up in spam file. Must be content. But because Yahoo is so limited will be moving all lists I’m on to gmail and opting out of feeds that have no value.

    As a safelist user, I only want to see email coming from the safelists I’ve joined. That allows me to filter and organize it. When people use their own unique email address in the From field, I wonder how they got my address and I’m liable to think they’re spamming me.

    It was Darren O’s Adchiever where I first noticed this happening, and at first I thought the functionality (for users to send an Adchiever mailing from Adchiever OR from their own email address) was intended to help users build their own lists. (A brief conversation with Darren on Skype cleared up that misunderstanding pretty quick.)

    Tim, a Wikipedia article on Email Authentication may help you figure out a way to send email from user addresses and keep them from being flagged as suspicious:

    But I’d still prefer to receive messages identifying themselves as coming from the safelists I’ve joined, rather than from individual member addresses.

    Yes the customer emails go to the spam I always check the admin box use the admin mailer

    Jim The spiders pick up on certain words like Free etc etc and automaticly send to spam so fillter may not always work Thats why you have to play around with the tiltle and content of your message I have an analysis site some where that will explains that

    Thats sometning I noticed Emails from the sites work fine but the from emails end up in Spam not sure why

    I find this topic interesting, I have not really used filters in Gmail and noticed sometimes email from the same person will end up in spam and other it will end up in the in box.

    Here is my thought we can not control what goes into the spam folder unless we check the spam link this will guarantee all mail from the sender will end up in spam.
    Be happy and just check the spam folder every day.

    I use filters for all the mailers so I can click on the label and just ear credits from that Mailer. The downside of this is that if someone sends it from a custon emal name it doesnt go into my filtered list. Adchiever is an example

    The truth is, it is not useful, and in fact, harmful. I have learned a lot about mail servers and how ISPs deal with email. I could write a ton about what I have learned, however I will stick to topic.

    Simply put, ISPs look at the ‘from’ address and compare it to the actual hostname of where the mail is coming from. If the ‘from’ does not match, it is a big red flag which results more often than not, with that email being filtered to spam, and depending on the other things, even filtered to null where whoever was supposed to receive it does not even see it at all, not even in the spam box.

    On top of that, by using your own email address, a person makes themselves vulnerable to those who love to harvest email addresses for spam purposes.

    Bottom line, if a person wants their email to hit the most inboxes possible, they should use the site email address, not their own, when given the choice.

    I use Darren’s method and they now go to my inbox instead of my spam folder, but I mail using Jerry’s method, since I can’t be sure everyone else is using

    Hi Tim
    Yes, Google sends most customized e-mails to spam and I really do not have the time to create a filter for each and I am sure few others users do. I send mine using the mailers address.
