PC Optimization

I am frequently finding myself help friends optimize their computer. I’ve finally decided to write up ways that I keep my computer up to speed, so here it is.

Cleanup Startup Programs
The first thing I always do is remove programs from the Windows startup folder, and from the run sections of the registry. You’ll be surprised at how many programs are setup to run something when you first turn your computer on, and guess how many turn off afterwards? The process is outlined in my Adware Removal Tutorial.

Disable unused Windows Services
The next step is I disable the Windows Services I’m not using. This can have a drastic performance increase! Of course you don’t want to disable things without knowing what they do - that is why I use Black Viper’s Guide.

Take the time to read the guide - it explains what each service does, and if you need it or not. If you go disabling services you do need, you’ll find things like networking, printing, and more not working.

Cleaning the Registry
Another very good thing to do is clean out your registry. I have tried Registry Mechanic and CleanMyPC, but for some reason I’ve always prefered RegVac Registry Cleaner.

The program you use isn’t as important as the task at hand - removing entries in the registry that are invalid. Every time you install something, it puts entries into the registry. When you uninstall something, many entries are not deleted. Cleaning your registry clears these out, and can help speed things up.

Disk Defragmenter
Finally, I like to defrag my hard drive. Yes, it can take a long time - but the performance between a highly fragmented drive and a defragmented drive is alot. I would say do it at least once a month. I check periodically, disk defragmenter actually tells you when it doesnt need to be run.

Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter

These four steps can greatly increase the performance of your pc, so remember to do them periodically. Then you won’t have to worry about your computer slowing down!
