I've not been posting much lately, and it's due to the digital battlefield. I've lost a few of the battles, but am determined to win the war. That war? Hard drive failure.
If you know me, you'll know that I'm a security geek. I have a ReadyNAS Pro Business at home for my storage. It holds up to 6 hard drives in an X-RAID2 array. This prevents data loss when a hard drive fails.
Well Disk #3 decided to die on me late Saturday night. In fact, it was right as Best Buy was closing, so I had to wait till Sunday. I go in first thing and buy a new Seagate drive that's on their compatibility list, and put it in Bay #3. It quick checks the drive, all is good, starts re-syncing the array.
Then a few hours later I come back and the display says Disk #3 has failed. I pop it in my desktop, load SeaTools to check the drive, and sure enough it had failed. Great!
I'll probably return the drive to Best Buy, and am debating if I want to get a full refund or try another drive. Saturday night I ordered a Western Digital Enterprise drive off Newegg, it'll be here tomorrow.
So back to the original Disk #3 that failed. I went to Seagate and filled out the warranty form, went through the process and got to checkout. It was either free, or for 2 day service $19. I chose the 2 day service. Only they didn't agree with my credit card information. I tried again, and still no likey. Well it turns out that they did in fact charge me twice, but their system didn't recognize it.
When I was at Best Buy I also purchased a new headset. The one I have now broke, it's the problem with headphones that have wires - the wire easily gets tangled. So I purchased a Logitech set that is wireless. I get hope, pop it in, and it's not working.
I searched their forums and found a post where a user said it wouldn't work with Windows 7. The Logitech support replied "It's not the headset! What is the poor manufacturer supposed to do when people leapt to a conclusion that has no evidence to support it?"
Well after seeing that and other similar posts where the official support is anything but helpful remarks, I'm not too happy with Logitech. So it makes it easy for me, I won't be buying their Google TV product. Instead I'll buy a TV that supports it internally. If they can't support a headset, it might be too complicated to support Google TV.
So there you go, some of the fun I had on my weekend. I can say in all this I'm really happy with my ReadyNAS. The support forum for that is insane. People are making cool addons for it and official support is overly helpful. So that part is great, and the fact that my data is fine even though a drive failed is great, so one part won..
Update: for those of you who care, Best Buy took back both items no problem. I also found the Plantronics wireless set in stock (guess they stock up Sunday nights?) which worked without a hitch. I had a wired Plantronics before and both work great!

Can’t wait to see you next weekend….
Having owned a computer store for several years, I understand your technological infatuation. Even though I sold that business to enter the online business world full-time over eight years ago, I’m still constantly upgrading my computers and adding new gadgets.
Much of my technology purchases these days is centered around gadgets and software that will make my online business more efficient. A backup or Raid system is definitely something that is money well spent. If anyone ever has a hard drive crash and loses all of their info and has to start over, they will soon agree.
I’m just surprised that with all of my blogs and sites that I own, I have never built one that deals with general computer advice… Maybe that will one for the future. There is definitely a lot of misinformation out there on the subject…
Gary,
Being a real non techy and nervous at the mention of a hard drive crash, I personally would love to be on your list should you decide to set up a general computer advice blog.
I’d much rather be prepared for anything but unfortunately know zilch….
Yeah my most popular blog post is backing up to Amazon S3:
http://www.timlinden.com/blog/server/backup-mysql-amazon-s3/
Many people want to do it, but typically they don’t know the how. So they never bother. Unfortunately this one is real geeky for server admins (I get emails from people all the time asking where to enter those commands LOL).
Hi Tim!
Thanks for the very amusing post, though I confess that I don’t have a clue about half the things you talk about! Glad to hear your data survived, and no doubt the rest will start behaving.
Funny thing I’ve noticed is that once one bit of electronics starts acting up, then they all seem to follow along. So I always reckon it’s me, and I take myself down to the ocean to shake off my “bad vibes”. lol Don’t know if it really works on cleaning up the old electromagnetic field – I just know I feel better when I walk away from those quirky computer problems!
Saw your twitter post about the Logitech situation so I had that info in advance of seeing this…but the blog tells the whole story. Thanks for sharing and good luck with the new ReadyNAS.
Thanks,

Tim,
Its is so nice to know Im not the only one that had the weekend from hell…LOL. Surprisingly being married to a tech geek just like yourself I actually understood most of that and that just scares the bageesus outa me LOL. I will pass the info onto my tech geek (aka hubby) though just in case he could use it, so thanks for the info and the entertainment.

Gary, you should do that. I’m a techgeekchick and definitely would be a subscriber.
Tim – yeah, you know, I’ve been a big fan of the cordless Logitech headset I have but when I need another one I’ll probably go with a Plantronics instead. I used to use Plantronics stuff @ work when I worked down in the Medical Center, and had a small system at home a while back and it’s all very good.
And frankly I didn’t know about the Logitech-Google thing (tho it shouldn’t be a surprise I suppose the way Google and Yahoo are scooping up anything and everything these days. I am so irritated with Google lately with nothing working right (YouTube, Google Docs going down) or too slow (search often and various sites that are relying on Google API stuff) and was already very much against Yahoo getting their hands in anything (including my ISP now). Frankly nowadays, anything that’s not associated with Google, Microsoft or Yahoo is more liable to get my money – unfortunately that doesn’t leave me a whole lot of choices in some areas (not to mention the fact that anything one of the three don’t already own is liable to get swallowed eventually). Bleh.
It’s Google TV, basically they are making a system that lets you manage all your devices, shows, online videos, etc in one place. You’ll be able to buy a TV with it built in, or buy a device from Logitech for your current TV.
