The Ultimate Backup Solution

I recently purchased a Drobo, nicknamed the Disk Robot, and so far I’m excited. Basically what the Drobo does is takes the guesswork out of managing your files. You stick 1-4 hard drives in it, and then you can expand anytime and it’s automatically backed up so if one drive fails, you can just replace it and you’ve lost nothing.
I have the second edition one, which supports firewire, although I’m using it via USB. So far the speed has been great. Obviously not as fast as an internal drive, but not slow so I can still get things done.
Now on top of the Drobo I’m using JungleDisk to backup the contents of the Drobo to Amazon S3. This is great because I not only have a backup locally, but one off site as well. If someone were to steal my Drobo, or a fire, etc, I’d still have all my files online to download again. That’s KEY to having a complete backup solution. Everyone makes copies but fails to think about offsite backups.
You might think that it’s a bit pricey to get a Drobo and backup to Amazon. Well if you really can’t do a Drobo, you should at least be using JungleDisk to backup to Amazon. It’s cheap and it’s simple to setup, you just set it and forget it!
The last thing you want to happen is to have a hard drive failure and lose all your important documents. How long would it take to re-build your business workflow if you had to start with nothing? All those saved passwords, emails, software, etc. I just installed Vista 64bit, and that alone is taking forever, but I still have all my documents and passwords. Don’t let your business be crippled, BACK THINGS UP!

Hello
zarada08s lastest blog post..Netdisaster - Destroy the Web!
Great blog Tim, thanks.
I’d suggest potential buyers to read the first comment on the Drobo by digitalman.
But JungleDisk is pretty much a no-brainer.
Yeah I just read it, pretty good. You’ll always hear horror stories about ANY kind of hardware, which is why you should have 2 backups. And Jungle Disk has been greeeaat!
The only downside is it’s online so if you need the backup you have to download it, which depending on how much you got can take days. Which is why I want it on the Drobo too =P
Hi Tim
Great idea, have wondered about back-up seperately for a long time.
JungleDisk sounds like a great idea
Thank You for a Great TE,

I am bad in making backups, thanks for the hint,
Sraar
thanks for the reminder Tim, backing up is of great importance.
personally i use a 2 gig usb drive
and cd/dvd combo for onsite backup, i only keep the most important stuff(my pc has 200 gigs of space)
and i also use ibackup.com for online backing up, but i will look into the 2 solutions you mentioned as well.
good to have someone in the trenches pointing what they use.
