Gmail Just Got Better

Beleive it or not, but my wife is actually cooler than me according to Google. Yeah, her account got the new themes a few days before mine. She was talking about how cool it looked and mine was still boring.

Basically you can now pick themes for your Gmail account, which is pretty cool. Here you can see mine with the oldschool “Terminal” theme. Now I’ll change it to something I can actually read, but I thought it was fun that they’d have it. Even the logo was changed to ASCII art.

Besides the cool new themes, here are a few reasons you should be using Gmail (or Google Apps if you own your own domain):

  • virtually unlimited space - it’s always going up, and it’s hard to fill up 7GB unless you use a program that uses your Gmail as file storage (they do exist)
  • great spam filtering - Legitimate mail comes in, spam doesn’t. And they have the spam folder where *all* email goes. They don’t just ignore your messages if they think you are a spammer (which is good if your emails look like spam but aren’t)
  • filters - you can create an unlimited number of filters to do things like auto archive, mark as read, star, label, forward, delete it, and the newer “never send to spam” (aka a whitelist). These filters use very powerful search criteria, so the possabilities are endless. And since it’s done on their side, it’s not slow for you to get incoming email like say Outlook would be.
  • labels - some people hate that Gmail doesn’t have folders. Well, essentially labels are folders but each message can have more than one label. That’s the key difference. It can take some getting used to at first, but in the end it’s very usefull if you need to label something twice.
  • custom - If you sign up for Google Apps, you can get it for your own domain. Then you can have your very own docs, start page, email, calendar, etc for your domain. I have a couple - timlinden.com and riphoto.com. It’s great because then it’s YOUR email, but with the POWER of Gmail. (And not the silly forwarding mess that essentially relies on your host to forward the emails to Gmail)

So there you go. I could keep going on about it, but I figure by now if you aren’t ready to try it or already have it, your loss! =p

I love gmail too, but i use the latest version of outlook to download my email.

I hardly ever use the gmail site, outlook downloads all my email and send all my email through gmail, and syncs up as i delete them too.

I am currently using the Tea House theme and it actually changes according to the time where I lived. If it is night time, the theme goes dark and the characters sleeps. Love it! :D

Heh, you could have titled this post “Gmail just got SLOWER.”

That’s been my experience with the themes so far.

But you’re right, Gmail is the best!

Wow. Just checked out the new themes. They are sick looking. I don’t care for the cheesy big graphics versions, but the color scheme themes are great.

I’ve used gmail for quite some time, and I love the new themes. They are so easy to set up.

I also use the filters quite a bit to organize all my mail from my safelists. It works like a charm!

Thanks for the review. Looks like lots of people agree.

I have to agree with you, Tim. When I first got on the internet, I started with Yahoo mail, when at that time, it was better than Hotmail. Have since started using Gmail. At first, it took some getting used to, but after getting used to it, I wish all of my email accounts were at Gmail. The folder thing was what I was having problems getting the brain around, but after I did, it is just so much easier.

    Thanks

I am using Gmail, and I think it’s awesome. But I am just using it for one of my e-mail accounts though. And that’s the private one, I am using different ones that for everything related to my blogs.

I guess I could have forwarded the emails go Gmail, but I am really satisfied using Apple mail in osx.
